Why we built our own vegan community
The post with the most likes in our forum is about loneliness. Someone wrote about what it's like to be the only vegan in their own environment. Over thirty people responded to it.
That's what we built this place for.
No Trolls
Our vegan community is free and open to anyone who wants to connect: about activism, nutrition, fitness, and vegan everyday life. For those not yet vegan but genuinely interested, for experts who can help, for beginners.
Access is via a short form that we actually read. Those who answer the questions honestly get in. This costs us time and keeps the space clean.
Over twenty rooms, most activity is in recipes
Currently, we have 1,324 members. The Recipes room has the most posts, followed closely by "Debate & Arguments". There are also rooms for activism, science, fitness, a marketplace for recommendations, "Wins & Milestones" for small successes, and a help forum.
Two live chats run continuously, Daily Talk and Late Night. And there's "Ask Tobi & Raffaela", where you can ask us questions directly. In the sidebar, you'll find our downloadable guides on nutrition, protein, supplements, and allergies.
What is actually asked there
A few examples from the last few days:
- Is Red Bull vegan if the company supports an organization that conducts animal testing?
- Which vegan sausages hold up on the grill?
- Why do some vegan products say "may contain traces of milk"?
- What do I need to consider for vegan child nutrition, and what do I feed my pet?
The Red Bull question received over twenty responses, with differing positions. An echo chamber looks different.
There is a map
Because loneliness is the actual point for many, the community has a member map. You can specifically search for people near you. In the forum, someone regularly asks if anyone would like to go to an event together.
At Veganmania, we finally met in real life again
Veganmania in Vienna is a vegan summer festival organized by the Vegan Society Austria twice a year. We were there to raise awareness.
Among the visitors at the stand were also members from the community. The online space thus incidentally became a real-life meeting. The feedback on site was moving, and we will be back.
Thanks to the Vegan Society Austria, which provides a stage for vegan education with Veganmania.
