Speciesism definition

Speciesism is the first form of discrimination we learn, already as children. The classic example of speciesism: petting dogs but killing and eating pigs.

Speciesism is just as irrational and cruel as racism, sexism and homophobia, and it discriminates against animals solely on the basis of the species they belong to.

Where is the difference between dogs and pigs that would justify executing the one in a gas chamber and processing them into ham, while cherishing the other as "pets"?
That is just as irrational as calling someone inferior merely because they have a different skin colour or a different sexuality.

We brand some animals as "livestock", while the idea of eating our "pets" strikes us as barbaric.
In truth, consuming animals and animal products is always barbaric — other than in a survival situation — regardless of the animal's species.

If you do not want to be a racist and you speak out against racism, then you also have to fight speciesism in your everyday life and actively stand up against animal abuse — because racism follows exactly the same logic as speciesism.
