Yes. Vegan babies need vitamin B12, as this nutrient cannot be reliably obtained through a purely plant-based diet. Adequate vitamin B12 supply is one of the most important prerequisites for a safe vegan diet in infancy and can be ensured through suitable supplements.

→ A detailed overview is available in our PREGNANCY and BREASTFEEDING GUIDE, which we have developed together with Dr. Anika Döll and nutrition scientist Christina Dengg (BBSc, MSc). The guide is currently published in German, but can be translated using tools like ChatGPT or Google’s browser translator. The guide provides a well-founded introduction and general guidance, but it does not replace individual nutrition counseling or medical care. Especially during pregnancy and breastfeeding, we recommend seeking personalized support from qualified healthcare professionals. Examples include Dr. Anika Döll, Christina Dengg, or Dominik Machner.

Why do vegan babies need vitamin B12?

Vitamin B12 is involved in numerous important processes in the body. Among other things, it is needed for:

  • the normal development of the brain and nervous system,
  • the formation of red blood cells,
  • cell growth, and
  • a functioning energy metabolism.

Since babies grow particularly fast in the first months of life and the nervous system develops rapidly, an adequate supply of vitamin B12 is particularly important in this phase of life.

The good news: Vitamin B12 can nowadays be reliably supplemented to meet needs - both for the mother and, if necessary, for the child. What many people don't know: Vitamin B12 and other nutrients are often supplemented in animal industries via feed (see NUTRIENT GUIDE p. 8). Through self-supplementation, the indirect route via the animal can be bypassed, and intake can be specifically and transparently ensured.

How do vegan babies get enough vitamin B12?

How the supply is provided depends on whether a vegan-fed baby is breastfed or not. If the breastfeeding mother has a sufficient supply of vitamin B12, breast milk usually contains enough vitamin B12.

If not breastfed, only an approved infant formula should be used. This contains age-appropriate amounts of vitamin B12 and other important nutrients. Conventional plant milk is not a suitable substitute.

Depending on the individual situation, an age-appropriately dosed vitamin B12 supplement for the vegan baby may be useful or necessary. These are available, for example, as drops or juice. Which form and dosage are suitable should always be decided together with pediatricians or qualified nutritionists.

When should a vegan baby start supplementing vitamin B12?

There is no general answer to this question. Whether a vegan baby should be directly supplemented with vitamin B12 depends, among other things, on whether it is breastfed, how the mother's vitamin B12 levels are, and how complementary feeding is structured. This should be discussed individually with pediatricians.

Can vitamin B12 be covered by plant-based foods?

No. Commonly mentioned foods such as algae, fermented products, or certain mushrooms are not reliable sources of vitamin B12. Therefore, professional societies recommend reliable vitamin B12 supplementation for a vegan diet. Vitamin B12 is one of the few nutrients that generally need to be supplemented in a vegan diet. This applies to adults as well as children and infants.

Summary

Yes, vegan babies need vitamin B12. The supply can be ensured through a sufficiently nourished breastfeeding mother, approved infant formula or age-appropriately dosed supplements. In this way, the needs can be reliably met within the framework of a well-planned vegan diet
