Cigarettes are not automatically vegan. Although tobacco is a plant, cigarettes can contain animal-derived ingredients or excipients. In addition, manufacturers may conduct, finance, or commission animal testing. Therefore, for a vegan assessment, both the specific product and the manufacturer must be checked.

First off: Vegan here does not mean healthy. Smoking remains harmful to health and nicotine is addictive.


Are cigarettes vegan?

Tobacco is a plant – so smoking should be vegan, right? Not necessarily. Cigarettes and filters can contain animal-derived components. Additionally, there is animal testing in the tobacco and nicotine industry.


Which animal ingredients can be found in cigarettes?

Much more than "just" tobacco leaves can be hidden in a cigarette. Adhesives, humectants, and more can be of animal origin. One possible example is shellac, which is obtained from the secretions of lac bugs and can be used as a coating or binder. In addition, filters have been developed using hemoglobin from pig blood.


Is there animal testing for cigarettes?

Yes, animal testing does occur. When asking whether smoking is vegan, animal testing plays an enormous role. In tobacco research, dogs, monkeys, mice, and rats, among other animals, were used for experiments in which the animals had to inhale tobacco smoke, for example. Even today, animal testing related to tobacco and nicotine products continues to be conducted internationally.


Animal testing in the tobacco industry

In Germany, this is generally prohibited today, but the law provides for certain exceptions. Internationally, however, the situation is different, and regulatory requirements of various markets play a role, especially for new nicotine products. Therefore, a product sold in Germany or other countries that forbid animal testing for tobacco products may be part of an international corporation that conducts animal studies elsewhere.


Is rolling tobacco vegan?

The same problem generally applies to rolling tobacco as to ready-made cigarettes: humectants and other additives can also be present here. In addition, when rolling your own, you usually need:

  • papers
  • adhesive strips
  • filters

This even creates additional pitfalls. Those who want to roll vegan should check tobacco, papers, and filters separately.


Are e-cigarettes and liquids vegan?

Now one might think: No tobacco leaves, no classic filter, no cigarette paper – problem solved. Unfortunately, no.

E-liquids typically contain glycerin, which can be plant-based, synthetic, or animal-derived depending on the manufacturing process. If Vegetable Glycerin (VG) is explicitly stated, this is helpful for assessment. For unspecified glycerin, however, one should not simply assume a plant-based source. For flavorings, too, the origin should be checked with the manufacturer if in doubt. In addition, experiments have been documented in which animals are exposed to e-cigarette vapor. In short: Vaping is not per se the vegan version of smoking.


Which cigarettes are vegan?

PETA Germany lists Pueblo, Satin, and Red Bull, among others, in an overview of vegan cigarette brands. However, such lists are always a snapshot, and manufacturer information can change.

Which company does the brand belong to? A single brand may not conduct animal testing itself but may belong to an international corporation that conducts, commissions, or finances animal studies related to tobacco products.


How do I properly inquire with a manufacturer?

Ask as specifically as possible:

  • Does this product contain animal ingredients, or are animal excipients used in its manufacture?
  • Does your company conduct animal testing for tobacco or nicotine products, or are such tests commissioned or financed by your company – including with external research partners?


Animal testing can also occur with third parties

Tobacco companies sometimes work with external partners in their research. Historical documents show, for example, that external research institutes conducted inhalation tests on animals for Philip Morris. Therefore, when evaluating, it should not only be checked whether a manufacturer conducts animal testing themselves but also whether corresponding tests are commissioned or financed at third parties.


Conclusion: Is smoking vegan?

Whether smoking and cigarettes are vegan cannot be answered universally. Animal substances can be found in cigarettes, rolling tobacco, and e-liquids. It becomes even more complicated due to animal testing in the tobacco and nicotine industry. A manufacturer can offer a product without animal ingredients and still conduct animal testing or commission it from third parties. The most sensible approach is therefore a detailed inquiry with the manufacturer.

Regardless of the vegan check: Vegan does not mean healthy. Smoking is harmful to health. We recommend not smoking to stay healthy and fit for as long as possible in your advocacy for animals.
