Which nutrients are critical in a vegan pregnancy?

The most important potentially critical nutrients in a vegan pregnancy are vitamin B12, folic acid, vitamin D, iodine, and DHA from microalgae oil. Additionally, iron, choline, calcium, and zinc may be relevant depending on diet and blood values. Vitamin B12 must be reliably supplemented with a vegan diet.
As with an mixed diet, certain supplements are recommended during pregnancy. Considering the critical nutrients, a well-planned vegan diet during pregnancy can meet nutrient requirements.

→ A detailed overview is available in our PREGNANCY and BREASTFEEDING GUIDE, which we have developed together with Dr. Anika Döll and nutrition scientist Christina Dengg (BBSc, MSc). The guide is currently published in German, but can be translated using tools like ChatGPT or Google’s browser translator. The guide provides a well-founded introduction and general guidance, but it does not replace individual nutrition counseling or medical care. Especially during pregnancy and breastfeeding, we recommend seeking personalized support from qualified healthcare professionals. Examples include Dr. Anika Döll, Christina Dengg, or Dominik Machner.

Which nutrients are particularly important in a vegan pregnancy?
A vegan diet during pregnancy requires careful planning and increased attention - like any other diet during this special phase of life. The good news: potentially critical nutrients are well-researched today and can be specifically covered through diet and, if necessary, supplements.
Regardless of whether a person eats vegan or omnivorous, certain nutrient supplements are routinely recommended during pregnancy. This is not unusual but generally serves to prevent nutrient deficiencies and meet increased needs. Blood tests are also part of regular prenatal care.

1) Vitamin B12 – the most important critical nutrient
Vitamin B12 is the most important critical nutrient in vegan pregnancy. Sufficient supply cannot be achieved through plant-based foods alone. Therefore, regular supplementation is necessary with a purely plant-based diet – both during and outside of pregnancy.
2) Folic acid – important from the desire to conceive
Folic acid is one of the nutrients recommended for all women wishing to conceive and in early pregnancy, regardless of diet. Ideally, intake begins before conception and continues during the first trimester of pregnancy.
3) Vitamin D – sunlight is often not enough
Vitamin D is primarily formed through sunlight. Since sunlight exposure in our latitudes is not sufficient year-round, an adequate supply is often not guaranteed. Supplementation can therefore be useful.
4) Iodine – regionally recommended for all pregnant women
Iodine requirements increase during pregnancy. Many professional societies therefore recommend a targeted iodine intake for all pregnant women, in addition to a balanced diet and iodized table salt. This is especially true in regions with low iodine content in the soil, such as Central Europe.
However, especially with thyroid disorders, intake should be coordinated with medical professionals.
5) DHA (Omega-3) – often underestimated
DHA (an omega-3 fatty acid) is usually supplemented with vegan diets via microalgae oil. Although plant-based foods provide the precursor ALA, the conversion to DHA is limited.
For non-vegan pregnant women, DHA supplementation is also often relevant because there is not enough regular consumption of fatty sea fish.
6) Iron – assess individually
Iron is one of the nutrients whose requirement significantly increases during pregnancy for all diets.
Nevertheless, no general iron supplementation is recommended for all pregnant women. Instead, the supply should be assessed individually based on blood values. In cases of proven deficiency, targeted supplementation can be useful.
Other potentially critical nutrients in vegan pregnancy
Depending on food choices and specific blood values, the following nutrients may additionally require special attention:
- Choline: Since choline-rich animal products are omitted from a vegan diet, particular attention should be paid to an adequate choline intake.
- Calcium: Supplementation may be useful if the recommended intake of approx. 1000 mg per day is not reliably covered by calcium-rich foods such as green vegetables, tofu, or calcium-rich mineral water.
- Zinc: Many diets (not just plant-based ones) are relatively low in zinc. Since the bioavailability from plant-based foods can also sometimes be lower, sufficient intake should be ensured.

Summary - Critical nutrients in a vegan pregnancy and how you can cover them
The most important potentially critical nutrients in a vegan pregnancy are:
- Vitamin B12
- Folic acid
- Vitamin D
- Iodine
- DHA (Omega-3 from microalgae oil)
Depending on the individual situation, iron, choline, calcium, and zinc may also be relevant.
Supplements can help reliably cover the increased nutrient needs during pregnancy for both vegan and non-vegan diets. Because even a mixed diet is not automatically balanced or needs-based.
The crucial factor is not whether the diet is vegan or non-vegan, but whether it reliably covers individual nutrient needs and is well-planned. Individual supply should be regularly checked during pregnancy using blood tests and assessed together with medical professionals.
